The greatest misconception about networking is that you are selling, and as a result there is something phony about the whole endeavor. If you feel this way, you will come across this way. This is the primary reason to change not only your perspective, but your approach.

There is certainly a time and a place to sell; after all, you are attempting to capture business. But in the beginning, again, give, and give some more. Offer information, offer assistance. If a relationship blooms, the rewards you reap will be based on those seeds you planted.
