Playwright Mary Willard With Host Sandro Monetti on ActorsE Chat



Mary Willard is an accomplished playwright and queen of comedy. Mary's first play was a comedy titled, Elvis and Juliet, which opened in February of 1994 and closed that same year in December of 1994. It closed having enjoyed a successful, sold out run at the Theatre at the Improv in Hollywood, California.

In June of 2007, Mary's successful comedy, Elvis and Juliet opened again off-Broadway at the Abingdon Theatre. This time it enjoyed a six-week sold out run. It was mentioned in the New Yorker Magazine in which they called it a “zingy comedy of manners.” In October of 2009, it had another successful run at the Grove Theatre in Upland, California. Elvis and Juliet had experienced runs in five countries and 15 cities on the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s 70th birthday.

Mary’s other play, An Occasional Sin, was produced by the Company of Angels Theatre in Los Angeles in 2005. It was also produced at the Grove in 2007. Another of Mary’s plays, Deathtroupe was produced in 2010 in Upland, California, by the Grove Theatre. In December 2012, A Really, Really, Good Time, Holly Jolly, Christmas Carol was produced by the Grove as well and it was revived in 2013 at the Grove due to such a favorable reception.

In 1995 Mary's short plays, Meanwhile, Back At The Ranch, At The Vanity Fair, The Old Folks At Home, The Wedding Waltz, A Little New York Romance, Murder, She Rewrote, and Chateaux Beaux Eaux were all produced in Los Angeles by the Burbage Theatre.
For fifteen years, Mary and her husband Fred Willard, have run “The MoHo Group” which is a weekly comedy workshop. At the Second City Theatre in Hollywood, The MoHo Group performs a sketch comedy show each month.

Mary has studied playwriting with many great names such as Marsha Norman, Horton Foote, Romulus Linney and Doris Baizley.  Also, Mary has studied fiction writing at the well-respected Sewanee Writers’ Conference.
