Brian Herskowitz is a writer and producer who, like many before him, planned to move to Los Angeles for a career in acting. However, Brian learned that there were not many roles for shorter leading men, so he changed course and attempted to find a path for his creativity.
Brian began writing and wrote his first screenplay in 1980 about a young Judo enthusiast who moves to Tokyo to train for the Olympics. With an interest in Judo and the martial arts, this was a creative expression for Brian and found a love for writing. Brian has written and completed many feature films. Most notably, Brian wrote and directed the film Odessa or Bust which was an award-winning short film starring Jason Alexandar, Jason Schwartzman, and Red Buttons.
Brian has written for many television shows including the NBC sitcom Blossom, and many episodes for other shows such as Acapulco Heat, HBO’s Dream On, CBS’s Murder She Wrote, and CBS’s critically acclaimed series Tour of Duty among others.
Brian also teaches screenwriting and is lead faculty for the Boston University in Los Angeles, Writer in Hollywood Program. Brian has taught for other universities as well and has taught online for UCLA Extensions where he has students coming from all over the world. Brian has taught as an instructor for Writer’s Bootcamp for five years as the sitcom instructor. Brian has also held seminars in writing and has guest lectured on screenwriting, sitcom writing and writing for television around the country.
Brian is also the Senior Vice President for Artists Media Co-Operative which has several films in pre-production.
In keeping with his love for martial arts, Brian holds a first degree black belt in karate and a fourth degree black belt in judo.
