Producer Charles Floyd Johnson With Host Ron Brewington on ActorsE Chat

Charles Floyd Johnson is originally from Camden, New Jersey. His father was a World War II war hero who was in the American cavalry in North Africa and who returned home to tell his son stories of the Tuskegee Airmen. Charles' family wanted him to become a lawyer and sought to give him the best possible educational preparation. Therefore, Charles attended Stony Brook in New York in 1956. It was at this time that he became the second African-American student in history to attend this prestigious school. Charles was ambitious and was accepted at both Brown and Howard Universities following his graduation from Stony Brook. Charles majored in political science, minored in history and education. During his college years Charles worked at the Library of Congress.

Charles began attending Howard University in 1958. One of his well-known classmates was Stokely Carmichael. During the summers Charles worked as a teacher for young children. Also, Charles was active in marches during the Civil Rights Movement and was invited to attend John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. This came about as Charles was also involved in J.F.K’s presidential campaign. Charles had some political aspirations yet demonstrated an interest in communications above all. Upon arriving at Howard University, Charles joined the Howard Players. In 1962, Charles graduated with honors. Though drawn to the New York Theater, Charles went a more practical route and attended law school.

Charles also attended Howard University Law School with a full scholarship. Charles ended up publishing published in the Howard Law Journal, and thrived under professors Herbert Reed and Patricia Harris. Following his completion of the bar exam, Charles was drafted into the Army. Then later Charles moved to work in assisting AWOL soldiers as defense counsel. It was for this work that he received an Army Commendation Medal.

Charles moved to Washington, D.C. after he left the military. There Charles worked as a copyright attorney and his flexible schedule allowed him to study communications and work in theatrical companies in his free time. In 1971, Charles moved to Los Angeles where he attended the Professional Theater Workshop in Santa Monica, California for nine months taking acting classes.

Charles took on roles in television programs such as JAG and Navy: NCIS. Charles also has experience as writer and producer in a wide variety of television programs. Additionally, Charles has worked as a prominent figure behind many the noteworthy television programs which include: The Rockford Files and Magnum, P.I., NCIS, Quantum Leap and the film, Red Tails.
