NBC4’s Southern California weathercaster for NBC4 News at 5, 6 and 11pm, Fritz Coleman is a broadcasting icon known not only for his extensive meteorological knowledge, bit his innate sense of humor.

Originally from Philadelphia, Coleman went to Salem College in West Virginia and went on to study radio, television and film at Temple University in Philadelphia. He started out his career in radio as an on-air personality hosting various talk shows throughout the country until he joined NBC4 on February of 1982 as a weekend weathercaster, moving to weekdays in June 1984.
Throughout his career, he has worked as a stand-up comic appearing at various clubs in Southern California including performances at The Improvisation and The Ice House. With a number of appearances on the ‘Tonight Show’ and a number of NBC4 series and specials over the years, Coleman has received four Los Angeles area Emmy Awards for his work on NBC4 comedy series and specials.
In 1997 Coleman won the Artistic Directors Award for his first of three one-man plays he wrote, produced and starred in: It’s Me! Dad! which, was also aired on public television in Los Angeles. The play is a humorous yet heart-warming account of a father coming to grips with the skeletons in his own closet as he tries to recount his ‘baby boomer’ life for his young children. His second play, The Receptionist, looks at the wedding reception for the bride’s second marriage and the groom’s third; shining a hilarious light on the relationships within the re-establish constructs of this social event.
Coleman’s most recent play, Tonight at 11! looks at a typical local newscast from an insider’s viewpoint: Daily Variety called it, “surprising, incisive and powerful.”

In his personal life Fritz Coleman devotes much of his free time to charitable activity and organizes events for local service and civic organizations as well as serving as master of ceremonies for many of Southern California’s community events. His dedication to community service has won him numerous awards and honors including two Humanitarian of the Year Awards in 2004 – one from Shelter Partnership and the California Hospital Medical Center. In 1999, he was named Treasure of Los Angeles by the City of Los Angeles and the United States House of Representatives gave him the Humanitarian of the Year Award for his work on behalf of the American Red Cross. Fritz has also been honored for his long-term commitment to the Los Angeles Chapter of the Salvation Army.
Named ‘Best Weathercaster’ in nearly every major paper in Southern California, Coleman lives in San Fernando Valley, has two sons, a daughter and is an avid runner, rollerblader and skier.
