Demand Justice for Exxon's Climate Misinformation
Kurt,For decades, Exxon has known about the catastrophic implications of fossil fuels and climate change. But instead of supporting efforts to protect our environment, the company misled the public and supported politicians who opposed action on climate change — all to keep their dirty energy profits safe.
We can’t get the time back Exxon wasted blocking climate action, fueling a false debate over climate science, and keeping us hooked on fossil fuels. But we can hold them accountable.

As an active environmentalist, that’s probably a phrase you’ve heard a lot lately. But what does it mean?
Let me lay it out:
- It means for decades, Exxon has been burying its own scientific research that made it clear that their fossil fuels seriously contribute to the devastating effects of climate change.
- It means that rather than acting on this information, or even acknowledging it, Exxon gave millions of dollars to groups who work to block climate action and promote junk science.
- It means that while you and I have spent decades fighting against Big Polluters and their cronies in Congress, Exxon knew that we were right.
Outraged doesn’t begin to describe how I feel. That’s why LCV is calling for the Department of Justice to investigate Exxon for likely crimes against the American public.

More than 30 years ago — Exxon’s own scientists said this about climate change: “There are some potentially catastrophic events that must be considered.”
Exxon knew that their product could lead to catastrophe and endanger every living creature on the planet by accelerating climate change, and yet the company gave millions of dollars to groups that dispute science that they already knew was true. And now we’re all paying the price.
Now is our chance to fight back against Exxon.
When the public was made aware of the life-and-death lies that Big Tobacco was spreading, an outcry erupted that was so effective, it ultimately ended Big Tobacco’s misinformation campaigns and brought justice to thousands of people who had been affected by their lies.
We can do it again with Exxon. The New York attorney general is already investigating Exxon to determine if the company lied to the public about climate change, but we have to take them on at a federal level. When it comes to climate change, the stakes couldn’t be higher — and that’s why our voices need to be louder than ever.

I can’t even begin to imagine where we’d be today in the fight against climate change if back then, Exxon — the largest oil and gas company in the world — had told the truth.
We can’t get the time back that they wasted blocking climate action, fueling a false debate over climate science, and keeping us hooked on fossil fuels. We can’t undo the incredible environmental impact Exxon has created. But we can hold them accountable.
