Big Sunday is the largest regional community service event in America. Its a time for community building — when volunteers of every age and from every walk of life — work together to help others. Big Sunday is driven by the belief that everyone has something to give—no matter who you are, what you do, how much money you have, where you live or what ethnicity or religion you happen to be. This year on Big Sunday about 50,000 people — some who turned out as individuals, others with their families, and others as part of their class, church, synagogue, business or club — volunteered at 300 nonprofits, schools and other agencies. These volunteers, along with those we helped, hailed from all over the Southland — from downtown L.A. to the Westside, from the San Fernando Valley to the San Gabriel Valley, from Orange County to the Inland Empire to Ventura County. There are countless opportunities for every passion, talent, skill and age. Projects are scheduled throughout the weekend, and they last anywhere from one hour to two full days. Some are big, some are small, some are easy and some are more involved. All are rewarding. And now Big Sunday includes Green Sunday, formalizing its long-standing commitment to the environment. Although Big Sunday is held over one weekend, many of our volunteers stay actively involved throughout the year with the organizations theyve helped. In addition, Big Sunday does scores of Holiday Projects between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. Everything about Big Sunday is non-denominational and apolitical. All anyone is asked for is his or her time and talent (in other words, no money). The day is totally underwritten by foundation grants and private and corporate donations. The bottom line is that everyone has some Big Sunday mobilizes and empowers volunteers to build community through community service. This mission is driven by the belief that everyone has something to give, no matter who you are, what you do, how much money you have, where you live or what ethnicity or religion you happen to be.
