Random Moments

Random Moments

Feel free to post your Random Moments here to share with others. Thoughts, jokes, ideas, concepts and freedom of expression that is non-offensive is welcome.

I remember growing up as a child where face-to-face communication and telephones with party lines was a way of life. It was not unusual in my hometown of Cheboygan, Michigan for the entire community to know your business from listening in on neighbors phone calls to small town gossip. It was just a way of life. Other forms of communication would be newspapers, radio, television and writing letters

Today CMC has changed all of that with the ability to reach around the world to large groups or personally one-on-one, right here, right now! Today we have tremendous choices of how we want to communicate to the masses, or to individuals’, friends and strangers. In the past few decades we have been bombarded with email, blogs, personalweb sites, communitynetworking sites [like myspace, linkedin, facebook, twitter & a host of others], Instant Messages,SMS, Satellite and the list continues. You get the picture.

As a result of this technology boom, I can watch virtually anything I’ve missed by recording it on my cable/satellite box, or on Youtube.comto keep informed, to do research and be topical in my other communications. I am no longer trapped by the time of the broadcast so it can fit into my schedule. However, the trade off is the once cherished time of family and friends around the television watching important or favorite shows and then discussing and interacting with each other is rare. Is that trade off now a chat room with 200of my new cyber-friends who may share same or hopefully similar interests?

The upside is that even in today’s rapidly advancing, fast-paced society where the family unit is becoming more challenging to maintain we have moved into an era where even when we move great distances, we can also communicate at the speed of light around the planet. While Cheboygan to LA where I live today is roughly

2429.73 miles I can call, SMS, IM, email and communicate as fast as my typing or dialing will allow. While the youth of today who carry their own Blackberries, Palms, cell phones, IPods, laptops and other portable communicate devices may never know the excitement of party lines or the reason for family hour in front of the television; they will know how to communicate faster than we have ever known in previous generations.

Another benefit of these amazing advancements in communication known as CMC, is the ability to connect and reconnect with friends, business associates, networking and making new acquaintances. As a result of the

myspace, linkedin, facebook, twitter revolution, I have been able to reconnect with all of the above. Friends and others who contact was lost with as a result of our fast moving and ever changing society structure and in the past may have never happen again without these technology advancement is now possible. In the past two years alone literally hundreds of these acquaintances and friends, in additional tomany new ones have been possible as a result of CMC.
