Consider that life is a game which we play by rules, working toward goals.

The immediate playing field is the planet Earth. As we have been playing the

"life game" so far, our goals and rules are not usually stated consciously--and,

indeed, they often conflict with the goals and rules of other people. The

result is confusion and conflict--and wasted time and resources.

Consider that if we consciously agree on a few basic goals and rules, we can

introduce a new "life game" which is much more enjoyable and effective for

everyone.

Consider that each of us has gifts which we want to contribute, and that we

can do together what none of us can do alone. And that by cooperating, we can

multiply the wealth and be more fruitful in our efforts. By cooperating we can

be better stewards of Earth.

Consider that telling the story of how we are doing it, and inviting

Throughout history, in every part of the world, there have been people who in

some fashion have played The Game--but have not known they were playing it.

Today, too, many people and groups are playing The Game, at least to some

degree, but most of us haven't known it. By naming The Game, agreeing upon new

guidelines for working together, and consciously focusing on achieving a positive

set of goals within a clear time frame, we will all benefit.

In one sense, it is time for a "global show-and-tell" about who is doing what

and about what needs to get done. Imagine for a moment that we are sitting

around a global campfire telling the stories of how we are engaging in healing

the Earth. This time, it is the "cool campfire" of television, and we are

sharing our work--our "love-in-action"--with other brothers and sisters in our

global village.

By pooling our collective wisdom, knowledge, expertise and talent, we will

progress more quickly toward the goal--and make the process more enjoyable for

all of us. Television, telephones, radio, print media, computer networks,

short-wave radio, fax machines....we will use all of these tools and more for

expressing the Good News of how our Global Family finally is coming together in the

twilight years of the 20th century to heal ourselves and the Earth....

Consider that in this Great Gathering, each one of us has a piece of the

puzzle--and that in putting the pieces together, we will discover the larger

patterns of meaning. That when the larger patterns have become clear, together we

can discover our next steps forward.

Consider that each one of us is critically needed to complete The Whole. And

that we are all here to serve a greater purpose.

To begin playing The Game, carefully examine the goal and the rules. Do these

make sense to you? Which ones are already second nature to you? Are there

areas you feel you need to strengthen? What kinds of activities are you engaged

in within your family or out in your community--local, national, global--which

further the goals of the Game? Are you letting your light shine, putting out

positive images into our collective "global mind"? And, how can we best invite

collaboration from others who dream the same dreams? How can we organize

ourselves most effectively so that all the necessary things are taken care of? How

can we best celebrate our successes and build on them?

You and your actions are critical to the success of The Game. Thank you for

playing your part!

We also follow this practice of the Dalai Lama:

1. Spend 5 minutes at the beginning of each day remembering we all want the

same things, to be happy and be loved, and we are all connected to one another.

2. Spend 5 minutes -- breathing in - cherishing yourself; and, breathing out

- cherishing others. If you think about people you have difficulty cherishing,

extend your cherishing to them anyway.

3. During the day extend that attitude to everyone you meet. Practice

cherishing the "simplest" person (clerks, attendants, etc.), as well as the

"important" people in your life; cherish the people you love and the people you dislike.

4. Continue this practice no matter what happens or what anyone does to you.

These thoughts are very simple, inspiring and helpful. The practice of

cherishing can be taken very deep if done wordlessly, allowing yourself to feel the

love and appreciation that already exists in your heart.

historian Arnold Toynbee observed that the 21 civilizations he studied all collapsed

for the same reason: their inability to adapt to changes taking place either

within them or surrounding them. Like Joseph Campbell, Toynbee noted the

importance of myth in shaping the future of a civilization. For from the myth

springs the vision of new possibilities. Each nation, each culture tells such an

overarching story about itself. But when great changes take place, a new myth

is required. Butterfly is the myth for our times. It was published on Earth

Day 1990 as a tale of great transformation to help usher in the "Butterfly

Era" of global civilization. This butterfly theme was featured in the June 2000

In Butterfly, Norie states:

The caterpillars new cells are called "imaginal cell." They resonate at a

different frequency. They are so totally different from the caterpillar cells

that his immune system thinks they are enemies...and gobbles them up--Chomp!

Gulp! But these new imaginal cells continue to appear. More and more of them!

Pretty soon, the caterpillar's immune system cannot destroy them fast enough.

More and more of the imaginal cells survive. And then an amazing thing happens!

The little tiny lonely imaginal cells start to clump together, into friendly

little groups. They all resonate together at the same frequency, passing

information from one to another. Then, after a while, another amazing thing happens!

The clumps of imaginal cells start to cluster together!....A long string of

clumping and clustering imaginal cell, all resonating at the same frequency, all

passing information from one to another there inside the chrysalis.

A wave of Good News travels throughout the system-- Lurches and heaves...but

not yet a butterfly.

Then at some point, the entire long string of imaginal cells suddenly

realizes all together that it is Something Different from the caterpillar. Something

New! Something Wonderfull!....and in that realization is the shout of the

birth of the butterfly!

Since the butterfly now "knows" that it is a butterfly, the little tiny

imaginal cells no longer have to do all those things individual cells must do. Now

they are part of a mult-celled organism-- A FAMILY who can share the work.

Each new butterfly cell can take on a different job.----There is something

for everyone to do. And everyone is important. And each cell begins to do just

that very thing it is most drawn to do. And every other cell encourages it to

do just that.

A great way to organize a butterfly!

And a great way to organize a butterfly movement!

In Barbara Marx Hubbard's book, Conscious Evolution, she states:

As people started waking up, they became imaginal disks in the body of

society. The environmental movement, the antiwar movement, the Apollo space program,

the women's movement, the civil rights and human rights movements, new music,

transcendental meditation, yoga, and mind-expanding substances all encouraged

a young generation to act as instruments of social change--striving to birth

the still-invisible societal butterfly. And often when new leaders did step

forward, they were attacked by society's immune system fighting to maintain the

old social order of the caterpillar: witness the assassinations of Ghandi,

John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.

I think this is closer to the Tao than any other philosophy I know. I have

been telling people from the beginning that the butterflies are Taoists, having

never read the Tao de Ching. In December 1997 at the Earth Rainbow Network's

first meeting, I met a gentleman and told him many of my stories, and for each

one he showed me its counterpart in the Tao. He was somewhat of an expert in

the Tao and that experience was my first real confirmation that my notion was

right all along. You can't explain the mystery in words, you have to

experience it.

Now order is emerging out of chaos just as the butterfly emerges from the

chrysalis. Chaordic science tells us that when the pieces of the puzzle come

together there will be a new synergy greater than the sum of the parts, and a new

unpredictability. It was this energy and what appeared as unpredicability

that had some people concerned about me. Believe me, I had a formidable task to

deal with. Fritjov Capra was amused when I told him it would be ironic if a

butterfly group gets to prove the "butterfly effect", which he discusses in his

book, The Web of Life. Last Friday he called, offered a grant that I could

apply for through his Center for Ecoliteracy, and wants to meet over coffee the

first week of March. He told me, "Your project sounds very impressive and would

be a good candidate(for a grant)."

There are butterfly people, emerged and now emerging, all over the world.

They are the imaginals that Norie Huddle, Barbara Marx Hubbard, and others are

talking about. All that is needed is the acknowledgement that this is all really

happening.
